How soon can a smoker develop cancer?

Question by BvilleGrace: How soon can a smoker develop cancer?
My boyfriend has been a smoker for about a year, but as off half a year ago he has been smoking about 4 to 6 cigs a day. Just tonight he started getting a really bad headache and starting coughing a little bit of blood. Can it be cancer? He doesn’t want to go to the doc because he has no insurance… so how do I get him to a docs office if cancer is a possibility?

There are people that have smoked a pack a day for twenty years and have never had a problem and some who smoked half a pack for six months and lost a lung. There is no absolute time frame, smoking only increases the risk exponentially. As for lights or full flavors, there is no discernible difference in cancer rates; however there is between filter and non-filter.

It depends on if it’s heavy or light.
If it’s heavy you mighht want to make quit somehow.
If it’s light see a docter.
But generally whith both get a doc.

There’s no timeline for cancer. The headache & mild hemoptysis could have a number of causes and cancer is only one possibility. And the headache may have no connection with the hemoptysis whatsoever. You can’t force the man to go see a doctor but you can locate a free clinic and tell him about it. Good luck and hope this turns out well.

    Hi Bville,

You boyfriend is experiencing the symptoms of a lot different illnesses, ranging from mild to severe. The best way for him to know what is going on is to be seen by a doctor. If he does not have insurance, perhaps you could be seen by the county health department or a low cost clinic? Don’t let lack of health insurance get in the way of your health.

I don’t know how old you boyfriend is but lung cancer usually is diagnosed in older people. However, there are some cases where younger people are being diagnosed. Each person’s body reacts differently to cigarette exposure, so you can’t really give it a time frame of how long someone has smoked or how many per day.

Best of luck to you and your boyfriend,
